No, not all types of tuna are going to be extinct. Some tuna populations are increasing again because people are working to protect them.
In 2021, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) said that four out of seven tuna species that are caught by fishermen as food are starting to increase in numbers again.
These include:
- Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus): The population of these species increased, so it is no longer in danger of extinction.
- Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii): It changed from being in a very dangerous situation to a slightly less dangerous situation.
- Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga): It changed from being at risk to not a major concern.
- Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares): These species were almost in danger of dying out, but now they are not more in a dangerous situation.
This good change is because there are now more strict rules on how much fish a fisherman can catch & efforts to stop people from fishing illegally.
However, tuna populations are still in danger for various reasons like overfishing & habitat destruction.
- Overfishing: Tuna is a favorite fish to eat, but catching too many can harm their reproduction growth. This can cause problems because there will be less population of tuna fish.
- Habitat destruction: Pollution & climate change can harm the oceans where tuna live & have babies.
If you want to help save tuna, here are some things you can do:
- Choose seafood that has been approved as sustainable by groups such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
- Reduce your consumption of tuna.
- Know about the different types of tuna fish & whether they are being protected.
Saving tuna isn’t just about saving a fish. It’s about keeping the ocean healthy. When we take care of the ocean, it takes care of us too.
So let’s work together to make sure there’s always enough tuna swimming in the sea!
